HEAT
AND FIRE RESISTANT GLAZING
Ordinary annealed float glass in a heat or fire situation
creates problems because it readily transmits heat and
upon breaking allows the passage of flames and smoke. For
specific fire resistant glazing applications as per the
BCA or relevant local authority regulations, a fire
resistant glazing system must be installed. This
means that the glass, its frame and all components have
been previously tested as a complete prototype unit and
approved by an accredited testing authority. Glass on its
own does not posses a fire rating. It is just one part
of the complete fire resistant glazing system.
Heat Limitations And Standard Glass
ordinary float glass up to 50 - 60degC;
toughened float glass up to 250degC
HEAT RESISTANT GLASS
The above generic heading refers to types of glass which have been designed
to handle temperatures in excess of 250degC, for specific applications
such as food ovens, fireplaces and viewing windows for room heaters. It
also refers to applications where there are no BCA, legislative or Australian
Standard requirements but where the use of a heat resistant glass is commonsense.
Toughened Glass
It can be used in food ovens where temperatures will not exceed 250degC.
However upon impact glass fragments will spoil oven contents.
Neoceram
This is a 5mm thick clear transparent ceramic glass with very low thermal
expansion and mechanical resistance. Suited for food ovens, fireplaces,
combustion wood heaters and stoves where temperatures do not exceed 700degC.
This product can withstand short term temperatures of 800degC. Its cutting
and breakage characteristics are similar to annealed glass. Edges should
be arrised prior to installation. When installing NEOCERAM, care must be
taken to ensure the edges are not damaged. They must be protected by means
of asbestos cord or ribbon, glass fibre or some other non combustible material
to prevent breakage. Direct metal to glass contact must be avoided. Sheet
sizes are 1663mm x 773mm.

Vycor
Available in 3mm and 6mm thicknesses, Vycor is a silicate based glass with
a long term operating temperature of 1200degC. It is available in maximum
sizes of 300mm x 300mm.
Furnace Observation Glass
Neotherm® is a newly developed furnace observation glass for observing
molten substances during melting processes. In view of medical experiences
and technical factors, a furnace observation glass should meet the most
important requirements, that of protection against harmful radiation as
well as field proven recognition and evaluation of molten substances. Neotherm
is the first glass meeting both requirements and offering eye protection
as required in practice. It absorbs the harmful radiation within the infrared
range of 780nm and 2000nm, allowing the operator at the same time to recognise
differences in molten substances.
Available in gold filters for additional protection and non gold filters,
furnace observation glass is used in protective devices such as hand shields,
goggles, head shield and glare protection for cranes etc.
Neotherm is not designed for protection against ultraviolet radiation in
welding operations.
